Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy

About Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

When I first mention hypnosis to people they often ask, " Are you going to make me cluck like a chicken?".  The answer is no, of course.  I understand that for many people who have not experienced clinical hypnosis, their first idea about hypnosis is "stage hypnosis". Stage Hypnosis is a show where a hypnotist has willing volunteers do silly things for the entertainment of the audience.

Hypnotherapy is very different from stage hypnosis. You are in a safe and comfortable place (my office). I will talk to you first about the changes that you want to make in your life, and the goals you hope to accomplish with the help of hypnosis. Then as you sit comfortably in a chair, I will give you instructions, or tell you a calming story to help you become relaxed. When you reach deep relaxation, you hypnotized.

Hypnosis is a state of relaxation where the critical part of your brain is quiet. You know that critic in your brain that always has some negative input, " You can't do that."; "It will never work for you."; "You won't get better."  Yes, we have all had that critic in our heads. Once you are hypnotized, (the critic in your brain is quiet),  I will  then give you positive suggestions to help you make the positive changes in your thinking and behavior that will aid you in reaching your goals .

Q & A About Hypnosis:

Q.   Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

A.   You can not get stuck.Hypnosis is a natural state.

Q.   Will being hypnotized feel strange or weird?

A.    Hypnosis is actually a natural state of being that everyone experiences daily.  People go in and out of hypnosis all            the time. Have you ever pulled up to your home and realized that you did not remember the drive home? You were in        a state of hypnosis, and your subconscious mind was doing the driving!  Most people report feeling wonderful after          being hypnotized.

Q.   Could I do strange things while under hypnosis or afterward?

A.    The answer is no. You will not do things or behave in ways that are not normal for you. You will not do                               anything weird.

Q.   Will my insurance will cover hypnosis?

A.   The answer is generally insurance companies do not cover hypnosis or hypnotherapy.

Q.   How many sessions will I need?

A.   Hypnosis works faster than many therapies. Depending on the issue, 3 to 8 sessions are often                                           recommended. For instance, if you want to quit smoking, 3 sessions are recommended.
